The John Y. Faulconer Memorial Scholarship

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of a True Virginia Gentleman

John Young Faulconer, Sr. lived a life rich in character, community, and adventure. Born January 12, 1938, and lovingly remembered after his passing on February 25, 2025, John embodied the spirit of small-town generosity and big-hearted living. Known to many by his nicknames—“Bones,” “Buzzard,” “Country,” and “Yaya”—he was as comfortable at a livestock auction as he was dancing to bluegrass under the stars.

A proud graduate of Orange County High School (‘57), Woodberry Forest School (‘58), and Randolph-Macon College (‘65), John believed deeply in the value of close-knit academic communities. He served in the United States Air Force and went on to own and operate several beloved Orange County businesses, including Lafayette Farm Polled Hereford, Orange Sportsman Shop, Faulconer Hardware, and F+R Equipment. A lifelong Virginian, he cherished mornings with friends, a day’s hunt, a strong bourbon, and evenings watching the sun set over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

To honor his legacy, the John Y. Faulconer Memorial Scholarship has been established for students who reflect his values of perseverance, humility, and love of community. In recognition of John’s appreciation for smaller institutions and personal connection, preference will be given to students attending smaller colleges, including Division III schools.

This scholarship supports students who, like John, are committed to living fully—those who work hard, laugh often, and treasure family, friendships, and their roots.
